ED nurses have a longstanding history of providing complex medical care to
patients with urgent/emergent/critical conditions from across the region. Our nurses’ clinical expertise dates
back to1980 when the hospital first began specializing in emergency/trauma and
critical care. The
nursing assessment of ED patients demands advanced skills, as does ongoing
patient monitoring. Our nurses are highly prepared professionals who have
obtained Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS),
Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC), and Certified Emergency Nurse

The surgical intensive care unit
provides optimal treatment of critically ill patients under the most humane and
comfortable conditions. To achieve these outcomes, close cooperation between all
members of the health care team is required. In an intensive care unit, where health
preserving and life saving measures often have to be initiated with little or no
warning, such cooperation is most important.

5N Benign
Hematology
Benign
Hematology Unit, 5N, is a 10 bed specialty unit
designed to care for benign hematological conditions in a high quality care
environment. Research studies and clinical trials may be conducted by the
hematologist team on the unit. On average, the staff takes care of 50 patients
per month. Due to the chronic nature of sickle cell disease many of our patients
have a greater length of stay. This affords 5N staff the opportunity to get to
know the patient as an individual, interact with their families and to address
their unique needs.
5N registered nurses have
participated in competencies for treating adult patients and their families
dealing with complications related to sickle cell disease, hemophilia,
Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura and TTP. Our nurses are proficient in
administering larger doses of high alert medications and management of PCA
pumps. 5N nurses are validated to administer chemotherapy though the Oncology
Nursing Society. Our hallmark treatment is transfusing blood products. Our
patients have access to the best level of pain relief that may safely be
provided. As part of delivering comprehensive care, 5N staff collaborates with
the hematology clinic staffed by hematologist, fellows, residents, NP/PA and
social work.
